Compassion
Are you a parent running into other parents and their
children who speak another language? Well, you are
not the only one who is realizing that our country’s
language dynamics are changing. In fact, according
to current statistics gathered by Huilt and Howard in
their book Born to Talk, “18 percent of
households state that English is not the language
they speak in the home” (p. 378). The U.S. is a
country of immigrants, and I find it fascinating to
consider the variety of languages spoken by the
people who live here.
I have a story to share with you: There once was a little girl who was born in the United States to Czech parents. At the age of three she moved to Germany. She lived in Germany for two years learning German and Czech. When she returned to the United States at the age of five she attended kindergarten and first grade with no arising problems. However, when she entered the second grade, the teacher did not help the child learn English, but berated her for her attempts. The child transferred to another school and with the help of her new teacher and a speech-language pathologist the child soon became bilingual in Czech and English. The child I described was me, and this experience is why I would like to become a speech-language pathologist. Now I realize that learning Czech and German and struggling to master English has helped me develop an ear for the sounds of these languages, and more importantly, has helped me develop compassion for children struggling to speak better. If your child is struggling with speech or language, whether he is having difficulty saying his S sound or she cannot process complex language, or even if they are afraid of speaking in class, an encouraging hand can help them progress to more confident, competent communicators. The Sound Center has wonderful pediatric speech-language pathologists who are ready to assist. Email or call us for more information (630-435-5622). |
